Despite being in Lockdown, several of our members took part in VE Day commemorations & celebrations throught the Tendring District.
Whilst observing social distancing, members performed The Last Post in their streets, whilst others put on an inpromptu mini concert of old time songs from the War years.
Congratulations and thanks to Chloe, Ellie, Dave F, Maisey, William, Trumpet Dave, Jane, Saffron, Jenny, Oliver & Ted – we know that all you were appreciated in your respective areas.
On the evening of Saturday 29th February just under 50 diners gathered at our Bandroom at Wix for our Annual Dinner and Awards evening.
This was the first occasion where we have held the evening at the Bandroom and all the hard work and planning ensured that everyone enjoyed a three course sit down meal prepared by our visiting caterers and waiting staff (and very good they were too ! – Thankyou to the ‘Curry Cart’ of Dovercourt!)
At the end of the meal, Antony, our Musical Director gave a short resume of the Bands recent progress and preparation for our forthcoming competition entries (SCABA at Brighton, and our Regional Competition at Stevenage) and then came the eagerly awaited presentation of awards. A shortlist of Nominations for each Award was given to every band member, so they could vote for whom they thought was deserving of the Award.
The award winners were:
The Alf Simpson Cup – for the Young Bandsman of the Year 2019-2020 – Annabel Brookes.
The Charles Carter Cup– for the Bandsman of the Year 2019-2020 – David Rowland
The Jack Quaintance Memorial Vase – for the Main Band Section of the Year 2019-2020 – The Bass Section
Congrats also to David, and Keith, who were unable to be at the event.
The Harwen Cup – The Player of the Year 2019-2020 – Paul Burnage
Thankyou to Emma our Band Chairperson for presenting the awards and for all the hardwork involved in organising such a succesful evening.
Thanks also to Alex for preparing a few Fun Awards, (for memorable events or characters within the Band) that rounded off a great evening
Tendring Brass recently held a training weekend at their bandroom in Wix.
The weekend was part of the Band’s ongoing development and training programme, aimed specifically at the Bands forthcoming entries into the SCABA Spring Contest in Brighton, and the London and Southern Counties area competition of the Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
The weekend was directed by the Bands Musical advisor and friend David Johnson.
We began on Friday night with a run through of the ‘The Golden Sabre’, the piece of music set for 2nd Section bands, to allow David to gauge the level of work needed to bring the performance up to contest standard. We soon realised we had a lot to accomplish.
Saturday was a day split in to workshops for the different sections within the band, culminating in a Lower Section run through. Our supporters kindly provided Pie & Pint at lunch time and plied us with lots of cups of tea and cake at the various intervals.
Sunday was full day 10-3pm of continually repeating performances and concentrating on some technicalities, rhythms and general ensemble togetherness. David announced that our last run through of the piece, before he began his long journey back to Cornwall, was a significant improvement of Fridays first performance and that he had been pleased with all our work to reach that standard. He set us all some homework! ready to impress him when he returns in March!! we hope.
It is with great pleasure that Tendring Brass can announce that David Johnson has joined the organisation as a musical advisor.
The news was released and celebrated in a recent post on the popular Brass Banding website 4Barsrest as follows :::
The north-east Essex based Tendring Brass has announced the appointment of the highly experienced David Johnson as their new Professional Musical Adviser.
He will both prepare and conduct the band at the forthcoming scaba (Brighton) contest and London & Southern Counties Regional Championship in Stevenage in March.
Self evident
Musical Director, Antony Sanders told 4BR: βTendring Brass is very fortunate to have worked with both Paul Holland and David Johnson over the past five years and the progress made throughout this period with their help is pretty self-evident.
Iβve known David for many years. His wealth of musical knowledge, experience and enthusiasm can only benefit the band further as it looks to build on some fantastic results in its first ever year at Second Section level.β

Saturday 21st December saw the Band playing at its last event of 2019, a fantastic evening at the Columbine Centre Walton.
A packed hall was the setting for an evening of music, dancing, fun and games. The evening was a huge success and not only did eveyone have a great time, a sizable amount was raised for band funds.
Particular thanks to Walton RBL for their generous donation to our Band Training Fund, to enable us to have first class tuition and guidance to prepare for the year ahead.
Well thats our final outing of 2019 done…. and what a success!! A big thank you to all our band players and support staff for their continued hard work and commitment!! Lots of exciting things already lined up for 2020!! Merry Christmas from all at Tendring Brass!! πππΆπΊπΌ
Wishing to reinstate the Harwich Hospital “Carols Around the Christmas Tree”. A Harwich resident opened his wonderful garden to neighbours and invited guests one evening during the run up to Christmas.
Tendring Brass set the festive mood as everyone arrived, Reverend Margaret welcomed everyone present and the band were joined by Harwich Sing to lead the guests in an hour of carol singing.
Although rain had been forecast the evening stayed dry as we enjoyed the soup, mulled wine and mince pies, which along with a splendid tombola, helped to raise over Β£1000 for Macmillian Nurses.
The organiser is hoping that the success of this initial event may become part of Christmas Celebrations in Harwich once again.
Tendring Brass held a fundraising Christmas Family Quiznight on Saturday 14th December.
Teams competed in the event hosted by quizmaster Bob, who had created the quiz with each round being Christmas themed.
A great night was had by all, and congratulations go to the winning team ‘ Jinglebells & Baubles’ conmprising of Michelle, Carol, Jason and Zachory – well done!
Thanks to ,everyone who attended, to quizmaster Bob, and to the bandroom prep team who spent time decorating the bandroom with Christmas tree, Christmas lights and decorations it looked really great.
Tendring Brass were once again invited over to Mersea Island by the Mersea branch of The Royal British Legion.
This is a long standing event that the Band look forward to as the concert is so warmly recieved, combined with the fact that players are provided with hot drinks, sausage rolls and mince pies !
With our Assistant Musical Director at the helm, David Rowland, the Band again put on a wonderful evening of Christmas music including carols and singing by the enthusiastic audience.
Thanks to Mersea RBL for your hospitality, a great night was had by all.
